The daughter of a Supreme Court cook has achieved an extraordinary feat. At just 26 years old, she has received offers for LLM programs from six prestigious American universities, including Columbia Law School, University of Chicago Law School, New York University, the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School, the University of California Berkeley School of Law, and the University of Michigan Law School. In a truly remarkable fashion, Pragya has also secured scholarships from Berkeley and Michigan law schools. These scholarships showcase how wonderful Pragya’s efforts have been, and how important it is to have a holistic academic and professional profile.

In a touching moment, Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and other Supreme Court judges honoured Pragya with a standing ovation in the judges’ lounge. Justice Chandrachud presented her with three books on the Indian Constitution, signed by all the apex court judges, as a gesture of appreciation for her achievements. Furthermore, recognising the struggles of her family, the Chief Justice offered shawls to Pragya’s parents. The budding scholar and a future pioneer in the field of law surely made her parents and family proud.

“We know Pragya has managed something on her own, but we will ensure she manages to get whatever is required… We expect that she should come back to serve the country,” Justice Chandrachud said, highlighting the court’s belief in her potential to contribute to the nation.

Pragya, who graduated from AMITY University in 2021 and worked as a judicial clerk before joining the Centre for Research and Planning, expressed her gratitude with a smile. She credited her success to her father, Ajay Kumar Samal, a Supreme Court attendant and cook, for his unwavering support. “I am privileged to be his child. He always supported me in whichever way he could,” she said, acknowledging her father’s role in her journey.

Pragya also mentioned that the Chief Justice has been an inspiration for her, a testament to the impact of leadership and mentorship on young minds.
