A good university in the north of Germany. Wonderful academic environment. May be one of the best for marine geosciences. I feel the faculties are limited, 4 stars only for that. Otherwise, I am happy.

In my experience with the admissions process at the University of Kiel, particularly for the Master's program in Medical Life Sciences, the focus seems to prioritize political and historical knowledge over subject expertise. My niece, a bright student and a medalist, spent over a month preparing for her interview, focusing on subject-related knowledge relevant to her field. However, when she attended the interview, she was asked questions mostly about German politics and history, topics outside her area of expertise and not directly related to the program. The coordinator, Edna Hutten, began the interview by asking her for a brief introduction and then moved on to questions about the course structure, Kiel's history, and German politics. The interview lasted only about 4-5 minutes, and when my niece couldn't answer the political questions satisfactorily—understandably so, as she is not a German citizen—the interview was abruptly concluded. Shockingly, she was not asked a single question related to her field of study. In hindsight, my niece feels fortunate not to have enrolled in a program where the admissions committee, under the guise of being "straightforward," seemed unnecessarily rude and dismissive of her actual qualifications. It is disappointing to see a university place such an emphasis on political knowledge over the subject matter, especially for international students applying to a medical sciences program.

I don’t know about the university but I would like to comment about admissions committee for masters in Medical life sciences program. The coordinator named Edna Hutten came to interview me. She asked me to give a brief introduction. Thereafter, she asked me questions about course structure, Kiel History and German politics. This took about 4-5 minutes. I couldn’t give satisfactory answers on German politics and history which can be understandable since I am not a German citizen. Guess what ! The interviewer ended interview in 4-5 minutes without asking me even one subject related question. When I think about the interview now, I think I got saved from studying in a university where coordinators think they can be extremely rude in the name of being straightforward.

I'm not studying there yet, but it's worse than I thought. Most people say that you have to manage everything by yourself with some help, like preliminary meetings. I think that's generally fine, but they mostly talk about irrelevant things and skip the important topics. I attended four of these preliminary meetings and didn't get any useful information. This wouldn't be a problem if the website were reliable. However, it only has old, incorrect data from previous years. While some of it is still useful because the events happen around the same time every year, much of it is outdated. I don't understand why it's so complicated to update the website. while I just want to learn chemistry After three weeks in the chemistry program, I have spent almost all my time in the laboratory without a sufficient theoretical foundation. While practical experience is essential, the lack of accompanying theory makes it challenging to fully understand what is happening in each experiment. Chemistry is a science that thrives on the interplay of theory and practice. Without a strong theoretical basis, it becomes difficult to truly grasp the significance of our lab work, which limits our ability to interpret results and apply our knowledge effectively. I believe that a balanced approach—where we are introduced to the theoretical concepts behind each experiment before performing it—would greatly enhance our learning experience. This structure would allow us to comprehend, observe, and document each experiment with a clear understanding of the underlying principles, leading to a more cohesive grasp of chemistry as a discipline. By preparing theoretically before each lab session, students would be more equipped to see the bigger picture in chemistry, connecting abstract concepts to real-world applications. This approach would strengthen both our academic foundation and our practical skills, preparing us better for future work in the field.
