What Is the Post Study Work Visa in New Zealand?
The Post Study Work Visa (PSWV) is a temporary work visa for people who recently finished an approved qualification in New Zealand. It lets you stay and work for up to 3 years. You apply for it yourself, so no employer needs to sponsor you.
What you can do depends on your qualifications. A graduate with a degree at Level 7 or higher can take any legal job with any employer anywhere in New Zealand. A graduate with a lower-level qualification must work in a job related to what they studied, and INZ writes that condition into the visa.
For most Indian students the PSWV does two things. It gives you time to find skilled work after graduation, and that work experience can later count toward a residence application.
If you are in New Zealand when INZ approves the visa, it starts on the day you receive it. If you are outside the country, it starts on the day you enter.
Who Can Apply and Which Qualifications Count
INZ applies one rule to everyone: you must have recently finished studying in New Zealand for an approved qualification. After that, your route depends on the type and level of the qualification.
Degree at Level 7 or higher
This group covers Level 7 bachelor’s degrees, Level 8 postgraduate diplomas, Level 9 master’s degrees and Level 10 doctorates. You must have studied the qualification full-time in New Zealand for at least 30 weeks. Doctoral students can apply after they submit their thesis.
Non-degree qualification at Level 7 or lower
The qualification must appear on INZ’s list of eligible qualifications. You must have studied it full-time in New Zealand for the whole period needed to earn it. Your job must also relate to your field of study.
Postgraduate diploma followed by a shorter master’s
INZ gives a clear example of how stacked qualifications work. Say you complete a postgraduate diploma full-time over at least 30 weeks, then move straight into a master’s that you finish in under 30 weeks. You can apply based on the diploma, and you get 12 months from the end date of the diploma’s student visa to do it.
Finish the qualification on your student visa
If you do not complete the qualification recorded on your student visa, INZ may decline your application. Anyone thinking of switching programs or leaving early should speak to their provider and an advisor before making the change.

What Changes on November 16, 2026
Two changes take effect on Monday, November 16, 2026, according to INZ’s announcement. Both matter if you are choosing a course for a 2027 intake.
Level 7 graduate diplomas become eligible
A Level 7 graduate diploma will qualify for the PSWV if you meet all of these conditions:
- You studied it full-time in New Zealand for its full duration.
- You were enrolled for the whole program, with no cross-crediting or recognition of prior learning.
- You hold a bachelor’s degree from New Zealand or overseas, with no time limit on when it was awarded.
The visa can run for the time you studied the diploma, up to 1 year. You will need a copy of your bachelor’s certificate and an official academic transcript. INZ does not require an International Qualification Assessment for an overseas bachelor’s degree, although it can check that the qualification is genuine.
Graduate diploma holders without a bachelor’s degree qualify only if the diploma is listed in Appendix 13 of INZ’s Operational Manual, and the work is then tied to a specified occupation. Everyone else in that position can apply for the Short-Term Graduate Work Visa.
New Short-Term Graduate Work Visa
This visa gives 6 months of work rights to graduates who do not qualify for the standard PSWV. Applications open on November 16, 2026. You qualify if you:
- hold a Level 5 to 7 qualification studied full-time in New Zealand for at least 24 weeks, and it is not an English language, foundation or bridging qualification
- do not qualify for the PSWV with that qualification
- have at least NZ$5,000 available
- have never held a Short-Term Graduate Work Visa or a PSWV
- apply within 3 months of your student visa expiring

What this means for Indian students
INZ accepts a bachelor’s degree completed overseas, so a degree from an Indian university can open the graduate diploma route. Take a graduate with a bachelor’s from India who completes a full-time Level 7 graduate diploma in New Zealand without credit transfers. That student can apply for a PSWV covering the time spent on the diploma, up to 1 year.
A master’s degree can earn a longer visa, so students who want more time to build work experience should compare both routes before they enroll.
Work Rights, Business Ownership and Family
If you hold a degree at Level 7 or higher, INZ lets you take any legal job with any employer anywhere in New Zealand. Two conditions apply:
- You must hold any occupational registration the job requires.
- You can work as a sole trader or own a business, but you cannot employ other people, either directly or through a manager.
Other conditions are worth knowing before you plan your first year:
- You can study for up to 3 months in any 12-month period. Longer study needs a variation of conditions.
- Your partner can apply for a work visa and your children can apply for student visas, as long as each meets the requirements of that visa.
- If your visa has no multiple-entry travel condition and you leave New Zealand, the visa expires. Read your eVisa conditions before you book a trip home.
Graduates with non-degree qualifications work under a narrower rule. Their visa names the type of job they can take, and it must relate to what they studied.
Cost, Funds and Documents for Indian Applicants
Beyond your qualification, INZ checks your health, character, genuine intentions and funds. Plan for these costs and tasks before your final semester ends:
- the visa fee, which starts at NZ$1,670
- proof of at least NZ$5,000 in funds
- a chest X-ray or medical examination, if INZ asks for one
- police certificates, if your total time in New Zealand will reach 24 months
- certified English translations of any police or medical certificates not in English
Documents to upload
When you apply, INZ asks for a copy of your passport, which must stay valid for at least 3 months after the date you plan to leave New Zealand. You also need one acceptable photo, proof of your New Zealand qualification and police certificates where required. For proof of the qualification, a copy of the certificate, your academic transcript or a completion letter from your provider all work. Enter your identity details exactly as they appear on your passport, because a mismatch can delay the application or lead to a decline.
Funds and bank statements
You need recent bank statements in your own name showing at least NZ$5,000 in total for your stay. INZ may ask to see them when you arrive. If your account is in rupees, convert the balance at the current exchange rate and keep a comfortable margin above NZ$5,000, because rates move between the day you check and the day you apply.
Chest X-ray and medical examination
If you will stay more than 6 months, INZ requires a chest X-ray from citizens of countries that do not have a low incidence of tuberculosis. India is not on INZ’s low-incidence list, so Indian citizens should plan for one. A medical certificate is not normally needed for stays under 12 months, so a visa longer than that can trigger the request. INZ emails you if it needs either one, so wait for that message before you book an appointment.
Police certificates
INZ asks for police certificates if you are 17 or older and your total time in New Zealand, including earlier visas, will reach 24 months or longer. The certificates must come from your country of citizenship and any country where you lived more than 5 years since turning 17, and they must be less than 6 months old when you apply. For Indian citizens the certificate usually comes through the Passport Seva system.
A master’s graduate who uses the full visa will cross the 24-month line, so start early. You do not need new certificates if you gave them with an earlier application and they were issued in the last 24 months, unless INZ asks again.
Application Deadlines You Cannot Miss
Count every deadline from the date your student visa expires, which is printed on your eVisa. Your result date or graduation ceremony does not start the clock.

INZ checks its records to confirm you applied in time, and you must hold a valid visa at all times while you are in New Zealand. If your current visa will expire while INZ decides, it will normally issue an interim visa so you can stay lawfully.

From Work Visa to Residence in New Zealand
The PSWV does not give you residence by itself. INZ lists it as a visa that can lead to a resident visa, and the link is the skilled work experience you build while holding it.
Work to Residence visas, including the Tier 2 Green List route, require 24 months of work experience in New Zealand within the 30 months before you apply, according to INZ’s wage rate guidance.
On August 24, 2026, INZ also changed the Skilled Migrant Category. The 2026 changes add a Skilled Work Experience pathway that allows residence based on work experience alone, and a Trades and Technician pathway. A new grace rule also applies: if you start skilled work within 5 months of your work visa being granted, you only need to meet the wage threshold that applied when the visa was granted, even if it has risen since.
