Germany’s New dMAT for Indian Master’s Applicants (2026)

The Academic Evaluation Center (APS India) has announced a significant change in the German student visa document verification process, the Digital Master Test (dMAT), on June 29, 2026. This new digital aptitude test is now mandatory for Indian applicants for certain streams of Master’s program and is administered in collaboration with the German organization g.a.s.t.

This is not a replacement for the APS document verification process. Rather, it introduces a standardized testing component to test the cognitive and academic preparedness of Indian students. This all-in-one guide provides all the operational angles, exemptions, and timelines you need to know if you are aiming for the Summer Semester 2027 intake and onwards.
Core Definitions: What is the dMAT?
To avoid confusion in this new mandate, it is important to know the key terms and organizations that are involved:
- dMAT (Digital Master Test): Standardized academic aptitude test for selected Indian graduate students seeking admission to Master’s program in Germany, which is computer-based.
- G.a.s.t.: The Gesellschaft für Akademische Studienvorbereitung und Testentwicklung e.V. is a non-profit organization. This German society conducts the dMAT exam, registers candidates, manages test centers and provides test results.
- APS India: The Academic Evaluation Center in New Delhi. This body is responsible for verifying the authenticity of academic documents issued in India and for awarding the final APS certificate.
- Anabin: The official German database for the classification of foreign higher education institutions is called Anabin. It decides if your Indian university degree is officially accepted in Germany.
Who is Affected vs. Who is Exempt from dMAT?
The dMAT requirement is for certain academic disciplines. It is not applicable to all Indian students going to Germany.

Affected Academic Streams
For applicants to the Master’s degree program, the dMAT is required if the applicant’s undergraduate degree is in one of these three areas:
- Engineering (Computer Science, Information Technology, and technical-related).
- Business / Accounting / Finance / Economics
- Business / Management
In case your degree is of an interdisciplinary or mixed nature (Business Analytics, Data Science, Industrial Engineering, Financial Technology, etc.), you need to cross-verify your exact degree nomenclature with the official dMAT affected Fields List published by APS India. If your field is on that list, you are required to take the exam.
Who is Completely Exempt from dMAT?
If you are in any of the following categories, you are exempt from the dMAT:
Bachelor’s Degree Applicants: Students who are applying for admission to an undergraduate program in Germany are exempt.
- Students who have not finished 5 semesters (7 semesters for 4-year programs) of their Bachelor’s degree are not eligible for this graduate cycle.
- Doctoral track applicants are not required to submit the dMAT.
- Grandfathered Applicants: If you have already filled out the online APS registration form by June 29, 2026, or you have already sent your complete hardcopy documents to the APS Delhi office by June 29, 2026, you are completely exempt.
- APS Certificate Holders: If you have already completed your verification and have an active APS certificate, you will not need to take the dMAT retroactively for the procedure you have completed.
- Partnership and Exchange Students: Students on officially confirmed exchange programs, dual-degree programs, or university partnerships are exempt. You must submit your official partnership confirmation letter from your home or host institution with your APS file.
The 2026 Examination Schedule & Timelines
The timeline for the inaugural dMAT testing cycle is rigid. Because the first set of test scores will only be released in mid-October, this requirement practically applies to university applications for the Summer Semester 2027 intake and onward.
| Event | Key Dates (2026 First Cycle) |
| Registration Period Begins | June 29, 2026 |
| Final Registration Deadline | September 15, 2026 |
| Official dMAT Exam Date | September 26, 2026 |
| Online Certificate Availability | October 12, 2026 |
The “Late Submission” Concession for dMAT Certificates
APS India offers an important safety net for students who register after June 29, 2026. You may send your regular APS application documents first, even if you have not taken the dMAT.
APS India will start verifying your academic transcripts. After g.a.s.t. releases your digital dMAT certificate on October 12, 2026, you will need to download the certificate from your test-taker portal and submit it to APS India. The center will not provide your final APS certificate until they receive this test document.
Test Logistics: Structure, Centers, and Fees
The dMAT is a digital exam, but must be taken at a secure, invigilated testing facility.
- Registration fee: €150.00 (approx. ₹16,200 as per foreign exchange rates). This fee is to be paid directly to g.a.s.t. via their online registration system. This is a separate payment from the regular processing fee you pay APS India.
- Test Center Locations across India
The dMAT exam will be conducted in the licensed physical test centres in major cities of India. Seats are assigned on a first come, first served basis. Confirmed locations include:
- Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, and Bhopal.
- Chandigarh, Chennai, and Kolkata.
- Mananthavady, Mumbai, New Delhi, and Pune
Test Structure & Content Modules
The dMAT is about 3.5 hours long and is divided into two computer-based parts:
- The Core Module: This part assesses general cognitive ability, analytical reasoning and problem solving skills with quantitative and pattern recognition questions.
- The Subject Module: This module assesses your academic ability in your chosen subject (Engineering, Economics/Commerce or Management).

FAQs
No. The dMAT is an aptitude test and not a pass/fail test. A low score does not prevent APS India from verifying your documents. The achieved dMAT will be shown on your final APS certificate, which German universities will see.
No. The dMAT cannot replace university grades or formal institutional recognition. The lack of formal recognition will not be overcome by a high dMAT score if your Indian university is not listed as H+/- or H- in the German Anabin database. Please make sure to verify the Anabin status of your university before paying the exam fee.
Higher education institutions in Germany have full autonomy in making admissions decisions. Each university will determine the importance of your dMAT score on their own. Some competitive programs may have a minimum cut-off score, and others may consider it as background information.
