Chandrayaan-3 represents the latest lunar exploration mission within the prestigious Chandrayaan mission. Like its predecessor Chandrayaan-2, it includes a lander, Vikram, and a rover, Pragyan. However, unlike Chandrayaan-2, Chandrayaan-3 does not flaunt an orbiter. Instead, after thorough research, it depends on a propulsion module that acts as a communication relay satellite. This module carries both the lander and rover configuration until the spacecraft reaches a lunar orbit of approximately 100 km.
India’s third lunar mission, which commenced with an exhilarating launch from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota aims to achieve a soft landing of a Lander on the Moon. Additionally, it will deploy a six-wheeled, box-shaped Rover to explore and conduct experiments on the Moon’s terrain.
Despite the mission’s unchanged objectives, scientists at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) have paid heed to valuable lessons from the previous mission. The lander’s design saw a myriad of enhancements after undergoing a series of tests to assess its performance under endless scenarios, including the inability to reach the intended landing spot, electronics or sensor failures, etc. ISRO has come a long way in space research, as they carry out this mission with a sense of utter determination.
