Which country in Europe provides English medium MBBS courses certified by the NMC for practise in India?

Hungary is well established with four state universities with English medium MBBS courses approved by the NMC, WHO, FAIMER, WDOMS and ECFMG. Eligibility to take the FMGE/ NEXT exam (India) and USMLE/ PLAB exam (US/UK).

Indian medical aspirants who are unable to secure a seat in the NEET are facing a tough day. In 2024, over 2.4 million students appeared for NEET against approximately 106,333 available MBBS seats across 706 medical colleges in India. The Private Colleges in India have an average tuition fee of over INR 20 lakh per year. It is not a “last resort” for foreign medical education but a good plan for a large proportion of qualified students.

Hungary is an interesting place in that respect, as it is a member of the European Union, and it has a tradition of training medical students from the United States, the United Kingdom, the EU and India in its medical colleges in English at a much cheaper cost than the private medical colleges in India.

Why Hungary Specifically

Hungary’s medical universities have offered English-medium programs to international students for decades. The infrastructure, faculty, and curriculum are calibrated for non-Hungarian speakers. All four universities comply with NMC Gazette requirements in full: the MBBS program is a minimum of 54 months of academic instruction, the 12-month internship is completed at the same institution, the medium of instruction is English throughout, and graduates receive a licence to practise in Hungary upon completion.

This compliance matters directly. Under the NMC’s Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate (FMGL) Regulations 2021, a foreign medical degree is eligible for Indian registration only when all four of these conditions are met. Hungarian institutions satisfy them structurally, not incidentally.

It has an international programme in its medical faculty, which is taught in a structured English medium for all 6 years. University of Pécs

The University of Pécs is one of the oldest in Hungary and one of the oldest in Europe, and the medical faculty has offered international programs for decades. University of Szeged

The medical faculty of Szeged is renowned for its research focus and excellent biochemistry and pharmacology programs. It is situated in the south of Hungary near the border with Serbia, and has a slightly lower cost of life than Budapest, but the same academic and clinical level.

Program Structure and Curriculum

The duration of study for the MBBS in Hungary is 6 years, 5 years of structured academic and clinical teaching and 1 year full clinical internship under supervision. The internship is done at the university’s attached hospitals which fulfills the condition set by NMC that internship should not be divided between hospitals or countries.

Year-by-Year Progression

The first two years include basic sciences (anatomy, histology, physiology, biochemistry, medical physics) and medical informatics, Latin and basic clinical subjects. It covers theoretical concepts as well as the fundamentals of the sciences underlying clinical medicine.

In years 3 and 4, the focus moves towards systems-based clinical science: pathology, pharmacology, microbiology, surgery, internal medicine, neurology, gynaecology and dermatology. During this stage, students start to undertake structured clinical rotations in affiliated teaching hospitals.

The fifth and sixth years are mostly clinical. The fifth year subjects are oncology, paediatrics, ophthalmology, ENT, emergency medicine and psychiatry. The sixth year is the internship year, which is a full-time supervised clinical year in which the student will experience a variety of clinical rotations, including internal medicine, surgery, gynaecology and obstetrics, paediatrics, public health and others.

The diversity of the curriculum, including acupuncture, homeopathy, balneology and other conventional clinical subjects, is a reflection of the Hungarian integrated approach to medical education which fulfils the European and NMC subject requirements.
